What to do if You Lose a Pet

All Villagers are required to have their pet registered each year with Animal Control.  To do this you must bring your copy of the Veterinarian’s Rabies shot receipt and $10.50.  You will be given the HSV tag at that time.

Make sure to have identification on your pet, or have your vet insert a microchip under the skin.  The shelter has a scanner that will allow the Animal Control Officers to notify you should your animal be brought to the Shelter.  This type of I.D. is recognized anywhere in the U.S.A. where there is a scanner.  “We had car accident and the dog (cat) was not wearing a collar”  “The repairman (Grandchild) left the door open and the dog (puppy, cat, kitten) got out, and did not have a collar on.” “ We had a very bad storm and the dog (cat) disappeared without his (her) collar.” “We had a fire and our pet became terrified and disappeared.”  Those of us who work at the Shelter have heard this over and over by very loving families, many of whom have spent the rest of their lives worrying about the fate of their pet.  Please make sure your pet always has an I.D. of some type.

Have a good photo that you can duplicate in order to post in various parts of the Village.

Call the Shelter immediately (922-6547) and bring a poster of your missing pet and come to the Shelter in case we misunderstand your description.

Information you should include on your poster:

  • An accurate description  (spayed or neutered, age, color, longhaired or shorthaired, size, breed type, eye color, declawed, temperament, or any unusual feature.)
  • When it disappeared.
  • Where it disappeared.
  • Your name and how to contact you.

Please check with the Shelter once a week for at least 4 months.  Animals have been known to reappear  many months after becoming lost.

Call “Ask Your Neighbor” at KVRE 92.9 FM  (922-5678)

If you do find your pet, please notify the Shelter so that we can also stop worrying!!
